1/31 PRE-COMMUNE PROJECT

making the group as three people and to do the group work practice.

We have plan to do our commune project in Scotland today, two of our groupmates including me haven't been to Scotland before, and in this project, we want to do things together that we have never done before.

At first, we plan to do the work together in the library, but I think is common and boring, we can’t find any things interesting if we just stay in a place without any reason, so we decided to think a place that we really want to go and try to make it related to my part 7 context

I will like to explore more about the history that happen in England and the history that happen in Taiwan, maybe they have thing in common.

2/1 PRE-COMMUNE PROJECT

The reason that I have suggest Bath is becauseI’m interested in history and church, one of my friend who studied in the bath when she was in high school told me to have to go there if I'm interested in old church.

the history in the bath is related to my PPP(about the culture happened that after occupation)

After I did the research about the Roman Baths (Bath), I’m sure I can have explored my idea in there and develop my PPP.

2/11 COMMUNE PROJECT

To talk about our personal idea to the group mates, all of us think that Scotland is a way to far from London(it take 8 hours by train),and it's hard to get the air b & b in the limited time.

H.J.(Huijin Jeon) want to go to seven sisters that in Briton, the place is natural and relax, is different from London.

It's hard to decide between these Two places so we decided to go to both of them and make it a one day trip(just about1-2 hours by train)

2/12COMMUNE PROJECT

To decided every thigs today, everyone has accepted the things we did yesterday, but we have added the plan to go to China town, three of our cultures have hot pot in our traditional food, we would like to see that “hot pot” it is different from our country or not.

we plan to visit seven sisters in 2/18, visit bath in 2/19 and having food in China town in 2/21, in Friday we can conclude our opinion about the things that we did in last three days and think is it worth to do the commune in those locations, why and why not.

2/18 COMMUNE PROJECT DAY

Adam has joined us today for our commune. At first I thought it will be more difficult for us while  we have discuss  the feeling about these6 month in foundation, thinking about are we really enjoying  the class or not,are we interested in fashion or not,after the communicate we feel like making sure about what we want to do in BA and what we interested.

It's a long trip, it took 2 hours from London to Brighton, 1-hour bus from Brighton to seven sisters station and an hour walk to the location.

4 of us wasn't that close before, actually, I have never talked to HJ and Adam before this project. During the one-hour walking trip, we have taken the individual photoshoot without discussion, our concept is about the places that we have never been, so I don't want to intervene in peoples the first impression.

I have take the pictures that are framed in 4:3 and centre shots framed, its inspired by the film The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson. He used different framed to show the different time in the film (1985-1.85:1/1968-2.40:1/1932-4:3)

I'm thinking about how I can connect my commune to my PPP, so I have st my frame into 4:3 to present a nostalgia feeling.

(The day to Bath) COMMUNE PROJECT DAY

Today s commune trip isn't as tough as yesterday, the station is in the centre of bath  and its close to the place we art going to(Roman bath and Abbey church)

I have developed my idea from yesterday, I used the same framed but I have focused on shooting people, to see the interaction between people find the beauty between in normal daily activities that people would not usually observe.

We have discussed the different the places was, London is a multicultural city, Brighton seven sister have a natural view and Bath have lots of history, the three of us think that it will be hard to explore more ideas if people staying in a modern city (or same place) for a long time. Compare to London, the colour in Bath is vivid and bright, the colour in London is greedy and dull.

I feel the people in Bath is happy and joyful, we saw the kids chasing each other happily in the garden, that is the thing that I have never seen in London.

I have spent more time on the history of Roman Bath, the history that about colonized is related to the history that happened in Taiwan(which have colonized  by lots of countries), to think about that  people should keep the building that built in the dark history or shout get rid of it and forget it.

2/23 COMMUNE PROJECT PRESENTATION

our main concept is to go to places we all never been before so all our outcome are different but they are all based on the first impressions of the same environment.

I made a series of interaction between people so I can relate it to my project, my idea was to find the beauty in normal everyday actions that people would not usually observe.

Christina compared the locations with exhibitions that I went to such as the bill viola Michelangelo exhibition and also with some book research. This helped her to develop abstract symbolisms with natural processes which helped with refining my project concept.
one thing that we wanted to do was to bring materials to create more experimental photo shoots or film, but we decided not to because of the inconvenience of carrying heavy bags or suitcases around as they were all very short day trips. but in the future, we all talked about wanting to use these locations for further tests

The work that I shoot was inspired by Wes Anderson, I have made them into series so that people can see the different feelings between those two days.

One is only focused on the view and the people’s memory, another one is focused on people's daily activity. Even the framed is the same, there were people in all of the images, audiences still can feel the difference between those series, and showing I feel different in those 2 days.

Unit 7 personal project

WEEK24

For the first week of the personal project, I have related the commune project as my research for the PPP project, to research the history of bath and the how people develop the culture after the colonized. After research the England history I should start to think about what is the same thing that has happened in Taiwan, what things change after the occupation etc.

During the first day of the week, I have combined the picture that I shoot in Brighton (for commune) for my research poster, the frame 4:3 was the common frame that used in 1932, which I have used it as my shoot in Brighton to make it related to the nostalgic.

The poster using mix media and college, while it looks tacky. In the second day, I have using sketching to replaced some part in the image and it doesn't look that messy than before.

Researching for the common thing that I could find in Taiwan in the daily life, I found out there are lots of lots of things that people won't see in abroad and amazed them, but the things that I think is normal. The messy advertisements on the street, motorcycles everywhere, utility pole and utility box. I found out it will be interesting if I combine these things with different culture object.

To understand more about how people present the mixed culture, I went to the exhibition “English as a second language.”The work is about reflect the notion of British identity, within the framework of fashion, using their own cultural signifiers, to present a unique take on western narratives and aesthetics. From the work, I can’t tell how it combines or define the different culture,I can't tell it's about the two different culture if I didn't read the title, but I have understood how people present it with the culture and the fashion.

In Thursday, I have test shoot about the “mix culture”, I found a Buda head and some accessories from the second-hand store (the accessories and the Buda isn't identified to any culture,I just want to test about putting different style and background thins together)I have played with the fabric and found out it really interesting, through the different lighting,the fabric will have different colour ,I have made a small film that I throw the fabric in the air and see how the fabric work when it falls down.The way fabric dropped down is elegant and smooth, because   the sunlight the colour of the fabric have present in different colours, while the idea of “the movement of the fabric” didn't develop my outcome alot .The main shoot I did that day was the still life, putting the sculpture, accessories and the fabric to make a still life photo shoot, while I found out it's difficult to make the still life photoshoot interesting, the lighting, colours are more important in the still life shooting.

I want to challenge the still life shooting and make it interesting,I will like to explore more about the set design and how I could display the work in the set in an attractive way.

In conclusion, I have the idea about the materials that I can use, reflect on my own culture and decide to focus on set design in these two weeks.

WEEK 25

This week I have plan to design the set that explores from the test shoot I did last week and combines with the Taiwanese culture. To explore more from the research then I have done last week, I found out the colour of the advertisement in Taiwan is vivid and messy,and I think it will be interesting if I make it as a set. At first, I choose to use woods as a set, while woods are heavy and hard to carry, the architecture student has recommended me using cardboard will be easier to build.I have draft 2 kinds of set design(1. full of fruits 2.the tiny Taiwanese street/market ), while I want to try to focus on one special thing that I can see in Taiwan, so I had decided to repetition the sketching of the advertisement and make it as a set.

I thought it will be easy, while I'm wrong.It took me ages to wait for it dry(the paint on the set),and I have to repaint it to make sure the colour is saturated and vivid.To make the work more related to my culture,I have decided to write the text in Mandarin rather than English.

At first, I planned to make the interview about how people from different country think about the the london fashion,but Tim had told me the answer might not be interesting and it will be hard to develop even they gave the answer.I have started to think about Vanitas art, researching the object which has a different meaning,rather than just put the object in the set, it will lustre the set will the story behind.

I have been to the national gallery to explore more  symbolic meaning of objects used in Vanitas paintings

• Skull: Death, this is a clear memento mori message or the transience of life, a universally recognized symbol of death.
  
  
• Watch or hourglass: time is limited and is passing, therefore, use it wisely.  See a typical one-handle XVII century watch at the lower right of the photo.
  
  
• Books: Human knowledge and its temporary nature.
  Artist’s instruments e.g. Palette, brushes, easel: Indulgence in the arts, very few could afford to be painters let alone patronize the arts.
  
  
• Shell: they were normally exotic ones not commonly available in the Netherlands. They were a symbol of the vanity that comes with wealth, as these were exotic items at the time, only a very wealthy person would have one of those.
  
  
• Insects, decaying flowers: transience of life. They were inserted in paintings depicting expensive objects as a reminder that life is temporary and moral considerations deserved more attention than material things.

I found out the artwork is much more attractive after I know the meaning, while I don't want my photoshoot to be like fine art but like communication design, it's hard to balance between these; fine art is interesting but I will like to more focus on the communication design.

I have the idea Thursday workshop but I didn't finish it that day, the plan was developed from my first set but make it bigger and make the advertisement individually in 3D. It took me lots of time while I feel like it will be a new set for the different project, so I have focused on my first set this week and spent more time on test shoot on the first set.

I got some Turkish accessories and fruits, fruits and the set remind me the Taiwanese market/grocery store, I choose banana and orange to be a part of my set because of the tone of the colour is same as the background.I have tested to use the fabric that I used last week(the red fabric) to cover the lens, the iridescent of the fabric make the image fill like 70s Disco, remind me the Gucci fashion film in 2018 -the second summer of love; and it also related to my project ‘nostalgia”

3/11 -3/12

After making the small set, I have thought about maybe I should make the set that could fit in full model’s body. I have thought about the material I should use, using cardboard make the big advertisement as a set, the one I made in my first set was using by cardboard as well.

This set I plan to let them be stuck on the wall, simulate the real advertising. Using hand drawing to keep the childlike style.

I used double cardboards to stick together so that the set could be thicker, and easy to be stick on the wall. Using acrylic as a top - quality is a nice choice, the colour is vivid that could stand out.I have tried to use a complementary colour on the set(the text and the background ),

ex: green and red, while the testing of the colour looks a bit tacky, so I have mixed with some white acrylic to make it soft.

The outcome of the set - I can't tell its succeed or wasn't. the cardboard was deformed because of wet and paint, that makes it seems tacky; while the unperfect is fit to my aim - nostalgia, so I decided to fix the problem after the mix it up project,it might look good in the shooting.

Test shoot -I have done the test shoot in the kitchen, used the white tack to stick it on the wall, while the white tack couldn't keep the set on the wall for long.

after testing using white tack/double-sided tape/masking tape, white tack is the one which can make keep the set on the wall longest.

The reason why its a challenge is because the set was being stuck on the wall with angle.I found out the best way to display the set is to stick them in roughly 75-degree angle on the corner of the wall, It not only shows the ads perfectly but also creates a special perception.

Gallery - the exhibition in the white chapel gallery/Is this tomorrow, one of the works Salvator Mundi experience was inspired me to make the tiny set.

The work using different media, let the audience be in the centre of the work, audience using different angles to see the artwork. People can see the detail from the outside of the set either. The artist creates 11 sets in that tiny and limited space, which is amazing.

One of the toys in pollocks toy museum inspired me as well, the one with different layers of papers which stuck together as a set.

The different layer could let the audience be focus on the centre of the work and make the work become 3 dimensions.

3/14

I plan to make the small set that similar to the toys in the pollocks toy museum. I didn't have the image of the advertising in Taiwan and I haven't done this kind of set before, so I print out the images that I could found on google to make the rough testing, I might using hand drawing if this work.

At first, I cut the advertising down from the A4paper while it could remain in an erect position. I have stuck the thicker paper after I made the collage from the AD I printed.

I didn't stick them together like the toy in the museum, I wish it could be more functional and replaceable. Changing the layer during the shooting might make the sense enrich.

I have done the rough test-shoot after making the set, the problem is the camera shooting flow. With out helper, it's hard to control the camera and the set in the same time(the set should be pulled out fluently during the camera zoom in ).

I have research and reference how multiplane camera work from Walt Disney, which designed to make the cartoon more realistic and enjoyable, the multiplane camera has been used in feature lane cartoon.

The images were 2D background, but I separated different element in a different layer, it's easy to control the images to or away from the camera, and the camera is still, so the frame always be the same.

I have asked people to control the set this time and using the tripod, the outcome is good just the set isn't that detail, so I have to remake it again with illustration, but I will draw it on the laptop so it could be more efficient.

Putting fruit in the middle with jewellery works, too.make the work has the theme and amazed the audience.

3/18

This morning everyone has shared the work that did last week, the feedback that people gave was I can show more differences between the small set and the big set, research how people do the tiny set design(ex Isle of dog).

I display the large cardboard set in the classroom, while the white tack problem still not be solved. Others have recommended me to use the ultraripe, it can really keep the set on the wall, while it also can remove the colour from my set.

I have tested it on different angle of the wall, on the pillar and on the wall of the corner. It looks very corny, I think is because of the lighting and the messy background.After lots of testing the cardboard have been suffering a lot, I think I should use a different material, like wood board/plastic board so that it won't be that easy to destroy.

About the tiny set, I have research the stop motion animation, I reference and planed the way that they film the tiny set.But I will like to figure out what I can do more for the big set, and I can be more focused on the tiny set.

3/19 -3/20

The first set(the very first one) is too small for shooting and filming,it couldn't shoot in too much angle if I want to have real model legs or hands in the set.I have the plan to make the bigger one which is 420 x  420 x 594(cm 3)

I have spent too much time on my first set and it look very rough and corny, I have the plan to draw the illustration of the AD on the laptop.Using the brush that similar to hand drawing style on Photoshop, which can change the colour easily and also keep the childlike feeling.

The design of the ADs doesn't spend me too much time, I have just developed the idea from the old set and change a bit of the colour.To convey the meaning to the audience, I have written the translation under the mandarin.

I have made every ADs in two different colour, its save time and can make the set look colourful.To make sure everything will look nice on the new set, I have done the testing set on the A3 cardboard.The colour block as the basic and the ads stick as 45-degree angle on the cardboard look good,But because of the ADs aren't stuck flat on the cardboard so it might look messy it there is full of ADs on one set.

3/22

From the testing set, I knew that the ADs should be stick flat on the set, and the rest of the idea will be the same with the testing one.

I have bought the cardboard that is for making the architect, I thought it will be thicker while it wasn't.

The cardboard has been deformed after I paint the acrylic on it.I have to dismantle three cardboard, repaint them and put them under the books so that they can be flat.

To redo all the settings have spent me lots of time, and it couldn't be as flat as the new one, maybe I should use the pp board rather than the cardboard.

3/24-3/25

For the Mix It Up project, I have discussed with the group mats use the idea and bring the material that we have done so far in our individual project.

We have stuck the set I brought on the fabric so that we can just hang on the wall when we shoot, while the tape wants as stick as I try on the wall, it keeps falling off during the shooting.Hyjion have done the styling, she mixes the net skirt with the traditional Chinese clothing and the orange skirt, the colour orange fit to the set a lot and the model Yuru have a 60s actress face, which is very fit to my concept.I think the idea of this collab work very well, just the set is too tacky I need to use a different way to present it.

I think I can just print out big the illustration that I drew for the small set,and make them ass the background.

During edited the photos, I found out the lighting is very shit.All of the styling and the background is warm tone while the lighting is white and a bit blue,it makes the set and the clothing seems without energy.

3/26-3/28

On 3/22 I have already built up the set after make the cardboard flat, stick them with PP board do make the set stronger than before.

I didn't plan about how to display the illustration AD on the set, and I don't want it to be too messy like my first set.I have a reference from the illustrator Lee Kan Kyo, his work also has mixed with lots of different colours and details, while he has to change the size of the pattern in his art, so it will still have the main illustrate in the work. From the reference,I have printed 4 AD bigger size than others,and stick them separated on the different cardboard.

Without sticking all of them on the set(it will be too messy),I have hand draw some colour block on the base of the set, which I have done in the testing set as well. The outcome of the set looks good, but without the 3 dimensions things in the set, it looks a bit boring.

Reference from the look and the style of the advertisement in Taiwan, they used complementary colour a lot in the design, I have tried using red glass paper with green posca marker,and it shows very well.The glass paper imitates the advertising light box successfully,The complementary colour also makes the set stand out by itself.

Same as the testing set, I have stuck the tiny advertising light box on the wall in a 45-degree angle, actually because of the size,it doesn't really matter if it is 45 degree or not; While the 3D detail on the 2D set truly support the set and built the perception.

Test shoot-asking the model to stand in the set with a short skirt and the plastic high heels, while the skirt is too short that couldn't fit in the set, and the colour of lighting is shit as well, I should get the lighting that is for shooting.I have done the lighting that colour temperature that is between 6000k - 7000k, while all of my set and accessories are warm tone, the cold tone will destroy the colour which couldn't show the beauty of the fabric and the set. After I test in 3000k-3500k, the outcome does well, it doesn't only fit to the set but also fit the clothing.

While I still need to get the better dress for this tiny set, I might get one with lace and contrast colour with the set, so that it could stand out from the background.

Develope from the multiplane camera film that I have done,I have research and reference the animation ISLE OF DOG. Inspired me using stop motion in the film. Just for testing, without too much narrative, I did the zoom in the shooting which similar to the one I have done in the multiplane camera film the only difference was I work with the big set(the box). Reference from the feedback, I have a test to play with two different sizes of the sets. The testing of the shoot wasn't looking that perfect, but the unperfect makes the film looks like a hand made childlike nostalgia feelings.

I didn't edit with the stop motion app, it couldn't speed up the film so it looks tacky when it is 0.5sec for one image. I decided to edit with PR, which I can speed up different images at a different time, and make the film fluently.

4/1-4/3

The colour scheme and the colour temperature in the outcome of the Mix It Up project doesn't look well, it doesn't present the perfect side of the clothing and the set. As a reason, I have think about fixing the colour without reshoot, just need to layer on the different colour temperature of the lighting.

While it doesn't make me feel excited if I just changing the lighting,I also did the college. Inspired from the market and my topic-nostalgia,I have also including the fruit bag(the plastic material bag that carries fruits especially oranges), and dry flower.

To shoot in two different types of styles

• the first one - just using fresh flowers and images to collage
• the second one- paint on the images and using dry flowers to making collage

It's difficult to make the flower dry,I have to control the hit of the oven so that the flowers won't be too dry or lost the colour. Testing in different way to dry the flowers, hanging or put them in salt; its easier to keep the natural colour if I put flowers in salt while it will also easily been destroyed.

The outcome of the collage shooting is very nice, while the different style cant tell the narrative and the concept doesn't fit to the aim (nostalgia) of the project.I have decided to get rid of the idea of two different styles of the images, while I will still keep the outcome.(just h=give both of them the same concept)

I’m very glad that I did the collage and shoot it in3500k. The set and the colour create the old images feeling,I think the model has truly conveyed the lost feeling in this environment.

I have shoot lots of different angles and the one that I really feeling the most is the which focus on her face, the sad feeling and the missing can convey successfully to the audience.I didn't edit any images in this series, the lighting has been perfectly contral, the shadow creates the perception to the image rather than flat and boring.

It truly can't tell that the collage has been made on the noticeboard which having the ugly green background.

4/4-4/5

I have planned the shooting and to think about the material that I might need.

I have done the reference from the package of the famous Taiwanese snacks, which have a chicken on it. I think it will be cute and childlike if  I draw the icon not only on the bag but also on the flip-flop.

I can’t find any flip-flop(want to show the intimacy) that with the single and smooth colour, the shoe will be tacky if the colour isn't correct with the set. Inspired from orange, I have painted the shoe in green which mixes with white and draws the chicken in orange. The flip-flop have look much better after I paint it.

I have searched for a long dress or skirt so that I can see the dress when I shoot. I Borrowed a blue dress which with lace on the bottom of the dress, and yellow dress which have no decorated. I think the blue one will make the sense better because of the lace while the yellow one is more fit for the background.

After the test shoot, the blue one not only fit to the set but also can be stand out from the background. I have just chosen the blue garment as my final shoot garment,but the only problem is the top of the dress look very ugly and seems cheep, I might need to styling with the different garment.

I have thought about using the illustrate I draw for the small set design to develop it as the set for full body model shooting.

I copied and paste the illustration to make them be full of the A3 x 40 sheets, while after I put it on the wall it doesn't cover it at all.

I think the part that doesn't been cover does work well, the mottled floor and wall fit to the nostalgia feeling; so I have decided to keep the size of the set on the shooting day.

I aimed to let the model presents the missing or lost feeling in this day.I wanted to use the blue dress that I have decided before from the testing shoot because the garment can stand out from the orange tone background.

I have the plan to use the studio in the basement while the studio has been booked before I went to, the only choice is using the white background classroom.

It was quite difficult to direct model because she can't post naturally, going over my jock and some small chat let her forget she is a modelling; I have tried to let model interact with some fruit and vege, it does make her much more comfortable in front of the camera.I will take this into account when I film tomorrow for the small set, to let the model post more naturally with the set and the fruit that I based on.

To make the film more interesting and having the narrative,I decided to include both sides of the set in my film.I have no idea how it will be before editing the film, while I still want to do the small set filming just for testing.

After the test shoot, I have found out the better lighting and the better garment for the small set shooting.

Learning from yesterday, I direct the model’s leg to interact with fruits and vegs, which working with stop-motion shooting and filming.

After filming,I have the idea of using different size of the frame in the film which could connect to the size of the film and also putting two different stories in one film.

The first idea of music is using Carmon. My feeling of Carmon is having a strong sense of rhythm which can be fit my film because I want to make the film having twists and turns.

While during I was trying to match the music and the music, the rhythm and the film couldn't match well together, and it doesn't feel nostalgia as well.

The film doesn't present as good as I plan, I have a reference to the fashion film that student has done before. She records the sound by herself while she speaking about some article, which is quite boring to me.

With a nostalgic feeling, I have recorded the conversation between me and my mom without letting her know. I have only chosen the most touching part in this 44 mins conversation. I will think about the planning of the sound so that it could be much more touching than the original one.

4/12-4/14

There is three different part of the film. The small set film/full body film and the image that I have shot from the collage project.

The narrative is the story between nowadays and the time that happened before. I did the effect that simulates the old TV/film, which means the time is changing. At first, I plan to do with all the film while I found out it will be too tacky, just put them in some part of could gave the stronger feeling also the twist and turns of the story.

To make the film feel stronger, I have put the greeting conversation in the front part of the film, and at the end of the film, I have put the conversation about the age of my dad, which is serious and sad. The respond from the audience is positive, the narrative makes the scene and the arrangement of the sound actually support the film a lot.

Reference from the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel, which using the different frame to implied the story was in the different timeline (ex 1985-1.85:1  1968 - 2.40:1 1932 - 1.3:1), I have also using the different frame for the film of the big set and the small set. Also the colour tone, in The Grand Budapest Hotel, the director has using warmer colour in 1986 and 1985 such like yellow and orange, using pink and harsher light in 1932, to make the meaning more clearly,I have used orange/yellow warm tone and blue/white clean cold tone in the film .

week 29 class  & choosing outcomes

For my outcomes, I have decided the final outcome as the film that I have finished at the weekend. The feedback from the film is pretty well,people can get the concept clearly, while Han has suggested me to correct the colour scheme which I didn't recognize before,Hue and Hanna have suggested me to add more time at the end of the film, which causes the end of the film is quite strong which can let the audience have time to think about the words in the film.

For this week I have decided to develop the college shooting that I have done before, I think it could be the series of image rather than just been present as a single image.I'm thinking about making a booklet which can also support the film .after watch the film,the audience can read the booklet to understand more about the meaning in the film. While the booklet isn't talking about the time about"now and past" it's only focused on the "past ", which is present as the memories.
